A Beginner’s Guide to Social Media Camp Victoria 2011

This morning at our Meridian BNI meeting, Wayne Garner, a real estate agent with JonesCo Realty, someone who is just starting out with social media, asked a question I heard a few times during last year’s Social Media Camp: “Where Do I Start - Which presentations would I get the most out of?”.

Here is a list to help beginners get the most out of SMCV11:

Friday, June 3rd:

8:30 to 10:15

Workshop: Build the Ultimate Facebook Business Page in 60 Minutes w/ Chris Burdge

In Canada, there are over 17 million people using Facebook – having a Facebook Page is a “must-have”businesses using social media.

Workshop: Twitter 101 w/ Lorraine Murphy

Twitter is the other “must-have” for building a social media presence. Lorraine Murphy’s @raincoaster account is one of the most followed Twitter accounts in Western Canada, and a crash course in Twitter from her is worth the price of admission alone.

10:30 to 12:15

Workshop: Email and Social Media Marketing is Engagement Marketing w/ Guy Steeves

This workshop would be valuable for Real Estate agents who are familiar with traditional marketing strategies and are wondering how to transfer theire existing skills to digital broadcasting.

Workshop: WordPress 101 w/ John Overall

John’s WordPress workshops are usually much more techy, so it’s great to see him offering a basics course. This session would be valuable to anyone who is thinking about starting a blog and learning basic skills for making basic changes to the look and feel of a blog.

2:05 to 2:50

Session: Real People Build Communities w/ Angela Crocker

Angela Crocker is the authour of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Social Network, with no insult intended – this would be great for you :) (I’ll most likely be attending as well).

3:05 to 3:50

Session: Blogging for Business w/ Rebecca Bollwitt

You’re in business right? Learn about the benefits blogging has to offer. I’m sure @Miss604 will have a handful of useful blogging ideas for you as well.

4:05 to 4:50

Panel: Faith, Religion and Spirituality

This panel discussion looks quite interesting – if you need to recharge soul, after consuming all this tech talk.

Session: Wikibrands w/ Sean Moffitt

The extract for this session:”Reinventing your company in a customer-driven marketplace”, looks like it would be relevant to Realty.

Saturday, June 4th:

10:00 to 10:45

Session: Photography Apps and Image Sharing w/ Brenda Johima

Putting together a virtual tour of a property or wanting to spruce up your hobby photography? There’s so much to learn about the developments in geo-tagging and photography – this would be a great start.

11:00 to 11:45

Session: Your Virtual Marketing Platform for Small Business w/ Robin Heppell

This looks like another session that will help you get started with Facebook marketing, and compliment your understanding of Facebook if you miss the session with Chris Burdge.

1:00 to 1:45

Session: Think your boring old business can’t be social? Think again! w/ Tim McAlpine

This session looks like it will be practical for businesses trying to generate audience interest in their industry – not to say real estate is boring, but…

2:00 to 2:45

Session: Get on the Bus: A Social Media Story w/ Kemp Edmonds

For those who are not already “on the bus’ of social media, this session looks helpful to anyone considering building community connections using online communications technologies.

3:00 to 3:45

Session: Reputation Management and Digital Identity w/ Dr. Raul Pacheco-Vega

The biggest concern people have about Social Media is how to maintain their professional reputation while interacting online. For a beginner, increasing your knowledge on this topic will help you stay safe as you develop your online reputation.

4:00 to 4:45

Session: YouTube 101 w/ Rebecca Coleman

Video is the fastest growing sector in online content production. I’m sure there will be a few real estate agents eager to learn about how to use YouTube in this session.

This is a short list of of practical sessions and workshops that I hope will give you tips, tricks, and information that will work for you. I left out the Panel Discussions and Keynotes, so refer to the schedule so you don’t miss out on anything: http://socialmediacamp.ca/schedule/

Look forward to seeing you at Social Media Camp Victoria, and Go Canucks Go!
